I don't use Fruity mate so i'm no use to you there. But starting of with a really good kick sample will help you greatly. There's absolutely no way to make a shit kick sample sound good imo. I normally don't compress but i do use EQ.

if you want a really good kick sound on your mix, compression is necessary!

Compression don"t need to be high but a little with some attack & release settings corretly set, and it's ok!

In order of importance to me (I use FL):

1 - Layering - for that depth in the bass kick but watch out for phasing problems.
2 - Multi-band Compression - can do away with the need for EQ sometimes and can go along way in making your kick sound deep and bassy - it can sometimes make an ordinary bass kick sound extraordinary.
3 - EQ - to fine tune the final output

Layering will teach you the finer points of phasing as a kick is one of the easiest waves to phase - watch your EQ levels depending on your monitors (ie if they cannot handle 20HZ) to make sure the layering process isnt killing off low end frequencies or doubling them for that matter which can cause serious distortion depending on your bassline. Now chain a bassline to the kick compressor and play with attack, release and delay and start making old skool Scot Project basslines!

Good Luck.
